How to Recognize the Perfect Golf Swing
Only two players in golf could on command hit the golf ball straight.By all accounts, the number is two. Who were they?
Most hard core golfers would quickly identify Ben Hogan. Students of the game will recognize the other golfer’s name as Moe Norman. Moe Norman has enjoyed almost mythical status as a ball striker. A reclusive Canadian Tour pro, Moe Norman rarely left his home country because of acute feeling of insecurity, but nevertheless made a name for himself among the golfing fraternity.
Like many of you, I have only seen Ben Hogan on video and in the slo-mo footage I have acquired over the years. As a teenager, I saw Moe play several times in Canada and I saw him again much later in his career when he gave clinics around the country.
I was actually a caddy in Moe’s group for two days (I was looping for another pro at the time).
What set these two apart from virtually all their peers? What made them unique?
But just think of how rare this skill is. Of the legions of folks who have played the game,only these two gentlemen could point and hit it to that spot.
Moe was certainly a challenge to understand because of his personality and he was awkward in most social situations. Moe’s cause was not aided by the fact that he frequently butted heads with the ruling board of governors and that such disagreements became quite public.Many dismissed Moe’s rambling as gibberish when he tried to explain the foundational elements of his swing. Often accused of uttering idiotic drivel, few serious teachers or writers gave any credence to whatever insights the man attemted to share. Virtally no one was interested in what Moe had to say about the golf swing notwithstanding his undeniable skill.It was not unlike trying to learn from a Zen master when you tried to piece together the elements that made Moe’s swing tick.
New theories now abound from an assortment of golf lab rats who are now trying to re-engineer the magic of Moe’s swing. Rival swing theories have emerged, each proclaiming to have unlocked the secrets to Moe’s unique and powerful swing . The claims of offering golfing nirvana based on Moe’s swing have been greatly exaggerated and are, frankly, disappointing.
Make no mistake, Moe’s move was both powerful and explosive through the ball. The modern swing theories which purport to capture the essence of Moe’s swing have failed to reproduce for the average player the power of the man through the ball . I, like others, have experimented with the new theories and abandoned them after experiencing a marked lack of distance.

When I had a strong back and a weak mind, I used to practice the darkest of the dark arts; that of being a caddy on the minor tour(it certainly wasn’t for the money!). You will remember that I once was a caddy in Moe’s group at a pro tournament. Patience was not Moe’s long suit when it came to the pace of play among pros. He compensated by wandering about chatting to himself when waiting for those ahead to hit or putt out. He would often drop 5 or 6 balls into a bunker on a just played hole and spank them out to keep himself amused. Because he was a bundle of energy, he needed outlets for his nervous tension.
The overlay of myth has now come to shroud the actual behaviour of Moe during his tournament playing days. You have to be more than suspicious if the stories emanate from former tour caddies! Though it might be difficult to sort fact and fiction,no one disputes Moe’s ball striking. And he continued to amaze and mesmerise galleries and onlookers alike with his unerring prowess well into his senior years.

Unless you saw Moe hit balls live, you really cannot appreciate how phenomenal he was . In the days when exhibitions were up close and personal, I had the chance to shag balls for Moe.It was disappointing that so few people came out that day to see truly one of the greatest ball strikers of this or any era. With monotonous regularity, each ball he hit about one bounce away from us.He simply motioned to back us up to a new position when he changed clubs and the balls would begin to rain down with predictable monotony. There is no way you could exaggerate the enormity of this man’s skill.

What a divide separates these two golfing legends. Where one struggled to communicate, the other failed to communicate. Moe imperfectly tried to share what he had discovered whereas Hogan maintained a shroud of secrecy.His method is shrouded in mystery and has spawned a whole host of research studies bent on uncovering the Hogan secret move. Unless a Hogan Rosetta Stone is unearthed, his swing method remains only partially understood.
Despite the efforts of the golfing community to reverse engineer the Hogan swing, the mystery prevails. Many proclaim to be teaching Hogan, but few take them seriously. Knowing Mr. Hogan, it probably gives him some measure of satisfaction that all this toil has borne little fruit . When asked to reveal his secrets, Hogan often gruffly responded by telling his audience to go find it themselves. This qualifies as the kind of advice a crusty Calvinist gives to his children.
Hogan didn’t engender warmth of spirit. And in fairness, he didn’t seek it in others.Few people, including his peers ever got close to Ben Hogan.So if not Hogan and if not Moe, where do we find the perfect golf swing?
The perfect swing exists . The swing can be described and almost mastered!
Why is that? It is vitally important that you first know what the human anatomy is capable of. Your comprehension of this puzzle is aided by an understanding of both human physiology and the laws of physics. Is it complex!
